Damiana (Turnera diffusa)
Evidence-based guide to Damiana: benefits, dosage, safety and interactions.
Evidence
Preclinical: Animal studies (2009 rat model) show CNS-mediated effect on sexual behavior; human clinical trial data is limited, mostly in combination formulas that make it hard to isolate damiana's specific contribution.
Traditional use and mechanism
Female aphrodisiac for desire suppressed by nervous exhaustion or anxiety; mood elevation; mild antidepressant. Used in Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean for centuries. Spanish missionaries documented indigenous use 16th century. Traditional liqueur preparation (Damiana liqueur, Mexico).
Safety
Limited human clinical trial safety data — most evidence is traditional use and animal models. No serious adverse events documented in traditional use. Mild GI upset possible. Not studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding — avoid in these contexts. Trace caffeine — relevant only in extremely high doses.
