Traditional use and mechanism

Antispasmodic for menstrual cramps and intestinal colic; anti-inflammatory; mild anxiolytic; digestive tonic. Used in Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Arab medicine for ≥2,000 years.

Safety

EMA classified as 'well-established use' for GI spasms and minor inflammatory conditions. Safety profile excellent at therapeutic doses. Relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter — may worsen GERD symptoms.
