Evidence-based guide to Korean Red Ginseng: benefits, dosage, safety and interactions.
Evidence
Moderate: 2010 RCT (n=32) showed significant FSFI improvement in postmenopausal women; 2014 systematic review found consistent positive trials for arousal and satisfaction.
Traditional use and mechanism
Adaptogen; sexual function support in menopausal women; general vitality and energy; stress resilience. Central to traditional Chinese medicine for ≥2,000 years as a supreme tonic. Korean red ginseng (steamed) considered superior for sexual health applications.
Safety
Generally safe at standard doses. 'Ginseng abuse syndrome' documented at very high doses (>15 g/day): hypertension, insomnia, morning diarrhoea — not relevant at therapeutic doses. Korean red ginseng and white ginseng have different safety profiles. Short-term studies well-tolerated; long-term safety data (>3 months) more limited.
