Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus)
Evidence-based guide to Red Raspberry Leaf: benefits, dosage, safety and interactions.
Evidence
Moderate: 2001 RCT (n=192) found shorter second-stage labor with raspberry leaf from 32 weeks; pre-conception fertility use is traditional/observational rather than trial-backed, though mineral and folate content is pharmacologically grounded.
Traditional use and mechanism
Pre-conception uterine toning; third-trimester labour preparation; post-natal recovery; breastfeeding support. Western herbal medicine use in Europe and North America for several centuries. Midwifery herb par excellence. NOTE: Leaf used medicinally — not the berry.
Safety
Simpson et al. 2001 RCT (n=192): safe from 32 weeks gestation — shorter second stage of labour, lower forceps rate, no adverse outcomes. Pre-conception: long traditional use record. CRITICAL: Avoid in first trimester — fragarine's uterine activity is contraindicated during implantation and early embryonic development.
